One of the most revered female Buddhist masters of the last century, Shuksep Lochen Chönyi Zangmo (1865-1953) was a very special Longchen Nyingtik lineage holder. Her main teachers were Pema Gyatso—who was a student of the great Shabkar Tsokdruk Rangdrol (1781-1851)—, and Chönyön Dharma Senge. She also received transmissions from Trulshik Do Ngak Lingpa, especially the Yangti Nakpo. After many years of pilgrimage, she installed herself in Shuksep monastery in Central Tibet, originally a Kagyüpa institution, to lead an outstanding community of practicing nuns with a focus on the Khandro Gékyang (The Laughter of the Dakinis, the Chö practice of the Longchen Nyingtik).
Among her students were Trulshik Rigdzin Lingpa, Tseten Yudron (1904 -1982), the Sixth Shechen Rabjam Nangdze Drupa’i Dorje (1911-1959), the Eighteenth Chogye Trichen Tubten Lekshe Gyatso (1919-2007), the Tenth Peling Sungtrul Pema Wozer Gyurme Dorje (1930-1955) and Ani Ngawang Gyaltsen.
